Here’s announcing Flash Ahead… The event that will showcase the future of the Flash platform to the Indian audience for the first time.

Date: 17th January, 2009

Venue: Lalit Ashok (erstwhile Grand Ashok), Bangalore

Time: 09:00 to 18:00

At Flash Ahead we are going to announce the selected finalists of riathon’08 and they will battle it out in an on-stage showdown of application, in front of the crowd and judges. Later in the day, the results will be announced and prizes will be distributed. You will also get to see the latest technologies on the Adobe Flash Platform.

Here’s a sneak peek in what you will see and hear on that day:

• Gumbo – “Gumbo” is the codename for the next generation of Adobe® Flex®, including both the next generation of Flex Builder™ and the next generation of the opensource Flex SDK. Gumbo delivers a long list of new features and improvements to existing features in three main themes: design and development, IDE productivity, and data-centric application development. Get to see Gumbo at work and talk to the engineers who built them…
• BlazeDS .NET – The .NET version of the Adobe BlazeDS open-source product
• Flex™ plug-in for Microsoft® Visual Studio®
• Flash Catalyst (earlier codenamed Thermo) – Adobe® Flash® Catalyst is a new professional interaction design tool for rapidly creating application interfaces and interactive content out of a designer’s wire frames.
  
  As you create your project in design view, Flash Catalyst is representing the design as well-formed MXML code behind the scenes. Share your project with “Gumbo”, the next generation of Adobe Flex® Builder™, to add logic and back-end connectivity. Move the project between Flash Catalyst and Gumbo while preserving design and code integrity

• Astro – Adobe® Flash® Player 10, code-named “Astro,” introduces new expressive features and visual performance improvements that allow interactive designers and developers to build the richest and most immersive Web experiences.  These include features like:
  • Advanced Text Layout – A new, highly flexible text layout engine, that enables innovation in creating new text controls by providing low-level access to text offering right-to-left and vertical text layout, plus support for typographic elements like ligatures.
  • Custom Filters and Effects – Creating portable filters, blend modes, and fills using Adobe Pixel Bender™, the same technology used for many After Effects CS3 filters.
• Alchemy - Alchemy is a research project that allows users to compile C and C++ code that is targeted to run on the open source ActionScript Virtual Machine (AVM2). You can know more about Alchemy here

All the best for the apps that you all are building. Idea Checkpoint date has passed and we got a lot of entries. Our team went through each of them and gave detailed feedback to each entry. The ideas have been exciting. Cant wait for the next check point

The registrations for Adobe riathon ’08 [link] are open till the night of 13th January, 2009. You can register anytime. The checkpoints are optional and for people who want to leverage our feedback and want to have a chance to win some Adobe branded merchandise..

Tour de Flex is a desktop application for exploring Flex capabilities and resources, including the core Flex components, Adobe AIR and data integration, as well as a variety of third-party components, effects, skins, and more.

It can be a great help during riathon ’08 as it has readily available sample code to connect to a lot of cloud services including Flickr, Amazon, lastFm…etc. Don’t forget to checkout the CloudAPIs, Mapping and Other Components section on the app. There’s even a Tour de Flex Eclipse Plugin…

Checkpoint – a place where travelers stop for inspection and clearance

There are 2 checkpoints in Adobe riathon ’08.

• Checkpoint 1 : Idea checkpoint – You can send us a brief description of your expected application(s).  The last day of submission for this checkpoint is 22nd December, 2008. You can find the template here.

• Checkpoint 2 : Prototype checkpoint – This checkpoint is for you to send us a prototype of your application. The last day of submission for this checkpoint is 6th January, 2009.You can check this post to see how to send the submission to us.

Why do I care?

• Get suggestions from Adobe on the application, additional design tips, resource pointers etc.
• In-house flex experts at Adobe will look into your prototype and give early feedback.
• Submitting a checkpoint entry will also make you automatically eligible for check point prizes, which will be distributed on the final day.
• Submitting a checkpoint entry will increase your chances for getting an invite to the final event on January 17th. More info on the final event here

Having said that, we want to make it very clear that these check-points are optional. A Checkpoint is an opportunity for you to get our inputs for your applications and in the process, win additional check-point prizes and get invites to the final event.

So go ahead, keep them coming…

Addendum: You can submit multiple application ideas and prototypes for the checkpoints. We would also like you to build all the applications that your propose; however we will continue to be respectful, whether you eventually submit all the apps, 20 apps, 10 apps, 2 apps or just one app out of the 100 ideas you may propose

The grand finale of the Adobe riathon ’08 has been now postponed from the earlier date of 29th November, 2008 to 17th January, 2009. We have also extended the submission deadline date from 26th November, 2008 to 13th January, 2009.

Even if you have already submitted your application, you can continue to develop your idea further and submit a refined entry. You can submit more than one application as well. As stated earlier, you must build your application(s) on the Adobe Flash Platform. You can develop your application using Flex, Flash or AIR.

On 17 January, 2009 the finale event will also feature a sneak peek of the new products, services and features unveiled at MAX 2008. You will familiarize yourself with Flash Player 10 (Astro), the new features of the next version of Flex & Flex Builder (Gumbo), new services from Adobe like CoCoMo. You will also get to see Flash Catalyst (earlier called Thermo), the newest addition to the Flash Platform, in action.

To make the whole event interesting, we have also introduced a few additions:

• We have introduced a referral system by which you can invite fellow developers to take part in this event. Each time one of the people you referred registers, your name goes once into a lucky draw which will be drawn at the finale event improving your chances to win cool prizes including Adobe branded merchandise and iPod shuffles. Sujit (a Technical Evangelist on our team) has set up an application to help you refer your friends. You can access the application here

• Also introduced are optional checkpoints that you can make use of to get our inputs for your applications and also win additional check-point prizes – Read more details about the checkpoints here.

Sending your entries at each check points will qualify you for prizes for each of the checkpoints, which would be announced on the day of the finale. Go to acrobat.com and sign into the Share service with your Adobe ID. If you do not have one, you can always create one from right within the website.
